UMC's sales running at 75% of 2004's level

LONDON — Despite achieving sequential and year-on-year growth in its November sales, the year-to-date figure at Taiwanese silicon foundry provider United Microelectronics Corp. (UMC) continues to lag behind 2004 sales performance by 24.6 percent. It is therefore almost inevitable that UMC will suffer a sharp drop in sales in the full calendar year of 2005, compared with 2004.

Sales at Taiwanese silicon foundry provider United Microelectronics Corp. (UMC) were NT9.41 billion (about $280 million) in November, up 4.1 percent on sales in October and up 1.4 percent on sales in the same month a year before, according to data posted at UMC’s website.

After a lackluster first half of 2005, UMC posted better results in the third quarter due to strength in its 90-nm foundry business. However this has not been enough pull back the ground lost earlier in the year. UMC said it that in the 11 months to November 2005 it has sold NT$81.75 billion (about $2.44 billion) compared with NT$108.43 billion (about $3.24 billion) sold in the same period in 2004; down by 24.6 percent.
