I have a friend that is mentally ill (adult onset after the age of 40). Its very sad - some sort of chemical imbalance. When he is out of sorts, he can act very strange. When he is properly medicated, most people wouldn't be able to tell. The mentally ill are not stupid. They are aware of threats to airplanes, and it wouldn't surprise me to see a person make inappropriate comments on a plane - if their medication is not working. How much of a threat this individual was - I'll wait until I read the eyewitness accounts. Sky Marshalls, and the police in general, have very tough jobs, and part of that job is making very difficult judgment calls in a short time frame. Clearly this was an unfortunate result, but I'll withhold judgment until the facts are in.
