Laz, Although Oakland has become a synonym for abject poverty and rampant crime, I know you know that Oakland is home to a whole 'nother populace and to housing costs which rival Palo Alto, et al. Oakland is home to prestigious medical centers and to Mills College. The architect Julia Morgan did much of her work in Oakland. I could go on in this vein.

Re the renaming of MLK Blvd to a kinder, gentler moniker, lots of cities have tried that tack, trumpeting the gospel that a name change will trigger positive, productive behavior change. What rubbish! If you like, you are welcome to ask me about "Friendship Lane." - Holly
