Searle: It occurs to me that the creation of the state of Israel and the events leading up to to this was one of the biggest disasters of the 20th century -- not least to the Jews themselves. A key reason for Hitler's fanatical anti-Semitism and mass killing of the Jews was the Nazi perception (probably accurate) that powerful Jews played a key role in bringing the United States into World War 1 on Britain's side because that nation promised to create a Jewish homeland in Palestine as outlined in the 1917 Balfour Declaration. So it can be argued in a very real sense that the fanatical ZIonist effort to create a Jewish state in Palestine by hook or crook was a key factor behind the Nazi persecution and massacre of the Jews during World War 2. A classic example of unintended consequences
