What do you think Hillary honestly thinks about criminalizing flag burning? Under other circumstances, wouldn't she be fighting against it? Or am I misreading her?

I have no serious idea and am as puzzled as everyone else. If you look at it as simply a political move, no substance intended, I can't see any argument for it; and only negatives. Voters like me think less of her; and voters who think legislation against flag burning is a good thing, only see it as pandering.

I've seen the argument that it's a bit of protection against the sins of swiftboating. And I guess so.

But my own reading of the electorate is that the large majority are simply so tired of such moves that the honesty and straightforwardness of an awkward spokesperson like Murtha gets votes. I watched portions of his rejoinders to Bush's speech at the CFR. It's very clear who knows his material and is speaking policy and who is simply engaged in PR.

It's snowing hard in northwestern Jersey right now. My wife was supposed to run a workshop this morning on one of the CUNY campuses but had to cancel out. The hilly streets outside the house have still not been plowed. Beautiful but dangerous outside.
