Peter, The tactic he used was a legitimate offer to those that had been awarded the Purple Heart in combat, but his wounds were all questionable, and I doubt that he would have gotten them without his political pull. While on a small scale, his political aspirations were in the works before he went to Nam.

Had he been the hero that he claimed to be, 250 of the men in the same outfit as him, would not have rose up to block his road to the White House. They knew he was lying, and had no respect for him at all. If a person goes ape in combat, and has to be removed because of his mental problems, his comrades in arms, will still hold him in respect for trying, but in Kerry's case, they considered his leaving an improvement in the Swift Boat group.
