Soybean Oil to Be Used to Cut Trans-Fatty Acids in Some Items

By a WALL STREET JOURNAL Staff Reporter

Kellogg Co. announced today that it will start using low-linolenic soybean oil to reduce the amount of trans-fatty acids in its Special K bars, Cheez-It crackers and other foods.

But the cereal and snack maker said it won't convert its entire line of crackers because it can't buy enough of the oil.

Kellogg, of Battle Creek, Mich., is urging farmers to plant more of the legume, also known as low-lin soybeans.

"We just don't have enough oil to address every product in our portfolio," said David Mackay, Kellogg's president and chief operating officer.

Kellogg is obtaining the oil from Monsanto Co. and Bunge Ltd., which has partnered with DuPont Co. to make its low-lin soybean.
