Gold is unlike many of the assets you mention -- it is positional and given to liquidity driven valuation, but it is also a well-defined alternative to holding anything denominated in dollars. The bigger the US asset bubble and related deficits, the greater is the appeal of an asset class that would rapidly appreciate in dollar terms when the bubble bursts and the currency falters.
