Oh, I won't like him at DOD, but I agree Lieberman will be preferable to Rumsfeld. To repeat myself, I just don't see Lieberman being willing to do it. I think he will prefer to have a long term hold on the Conn Senate seat. At his age, he graduated from Yale in the early 60s (younger than me, ouch), so he's probably middle 60s now. Plenty of time for him to enjoy the perks of the senate.

I've seen several arguments that the real power at Defense is Cheney, not Rumsfeld. If that's true, and if Cheney retains significant influence over Bush, the Lieberman option is even less likely.
