"was there a language used for Apple 1 & 2?"

The machine itself was programmed in 6502 assembly. The 6502 was/is a quirky one, but you could do some neat tricks if you could get a feel for the machine. And figure out where the documentation for the instruction set was just wrong, the docs from MOS left a lot to be desired. There still is a variant of it in production and is often deeply embedded in some devices. And yes, the ][ was used for '2'. The logo on the case was done that way, albeit a little stylized.

I too had several slide rules. Lost the last one a while back.
