I don't really know where the price of gold will go. I have no difficulty with the idea that it can double from here. But is it headed for explosive price increases? I truly have no firm view. What I do believe is that most Americans are going to find themselves doing something that does not come naturally: confronting economic reality. American finances -- both for individuals and governments -- are cruising for a bruising. Americans, on average, are facing a future of lower and lower standards of living -- a sustained period of decline. We are entering a period of stagflation where the burden of poor economic decisions weighs so heavily on our economy that we can no longer avoid the consequences. For those with substantial assets who are seeking a life raft as the USS America takes on water and founders, gold is likely to be an asset class of choice.
