"told him I don't buy into stories from unfamiliar sites like rawstory.com. " I've found rawstory to be very reliable. Most of their stories have links to the attributable news organizations. Those they originate themselves are usually confimed in the NYT or other "reputable" sources later. The only time I've seen they were obviously mislead, they had a prominent page one retraction the next day.
