Let me put it this way then - your rights and obligations as a US citizen and resident are spelled out in the federal, state and local legal codes plus the judicial interpretations of those codes. Do you consider those legal codes optional or binding, provided they are enforced in a fair fashion? If they are binding, what is the nature of your obligation to follow them? Just coercion, or is it the consent of the governed in a democracy?
