Edit-- sorry, thread- I thought I was responding to Thames on a different thread.

Pinter has always been against war of any kind-- he almost went to jail for being a CO and refusing to do his national service in the late 40s.

We student-produced a couple of his one-acts in grad school, and they are very strange, theatrically simple and linguistically fascinating, dealing with psychological themes. He has a very strange mind. I'm not familiar with his recent work.

As a child, Pinter was one of those children evacuated from London, and he says he never forgot being bombed. I wonder if that wasn't where his hatred of war started.

So yes, he is as left as you can get. (He was against Nato going into Kosovo, and he stood up for Milosevic). His literary talents are enormous, but I always question when people transmute one form of genius and expertise into another area altogether.
