I think it is you who missed the essence of my post which is to point out that lots of people use their position to comment or influence issues in which they have no expertise. Looking at the president, he is probably the most egregious example of general incompetence and lack of intellect especially pronounced but not limited to his handling of foreign policy. However, he is continuing to opine on events and peoples he doesn’t understand nor even desires to understand.

As to Barbra Streisand, I’ve seen her articulate her positions in much more eloquent form that I have seen many politicians, not even mentioning Mr. Bush. Was Schwarzenegger any more qualified than Streisand to voice his thoughts a few years ago? But then he had by your standards the audacity to run for governor without any prior political experience. He even avoided any political debates in his run for governor. Did this especially qualify him for the job? A similar path was taken by Ronald Reagan. Were you displaying similar indignation for the comments of these two actors or does your perspective depend on which point of view they represent? Clearly the last two weren't any more qualified and in many ways could justifiably be considered far less intellectual than Streisand. Have you compared the intellectual content of movies that the three made or participated in? Well, to my knowledge Reagan never even made a movie, he just acted. So it comes down to Streisand and Schwarzenegger and I don’t think it is a contest.

So where does that leave Pinter, he is a writer and as a writer it is his profession to espouse opinions and hopefully with his work confront the general consensus and conventionality. Artists are about creativity and creativity has to break convention. In the process most artists search deep within themselves for truth and expression. I much rather have somebody, “halo effect” OR NOT, espouse an opinion who has confronted the truth than somebody whose life’s work consisted of being nothing but a salesman of conventional thought.

Intellectuals in many cultures were the wise men in government. The judiciary in democratic institutions still is a remnant of this tradition. To attempt to shut them up under whatever pretenses is not only wrong but highly dangerous to the values in any free society.
