Carbon monoxide fumes send man in pickup to hospital

A 41-year-old man was taken by Life Flight to a Portland hospital Friday after he passed out from carbon monoxide fumes in the back of his pickup truck.

The Linn County Sheriff’s Office said the man, Fred Harrelson, was sleeping in the back of his pickup, which was covered by a canopy. He had turned on a propane heater for warmth.

Sgt. Jeff Cone said coworkers found Harrelson unconscious in the pickup parked on Jefferson-Scio Drive. He did not have information about where Harrelson worked.

Lebanon medics responded and took Harrelson to Samaritan Lebanon Community Hospital.

He was then taken by Life Flight to Providence Hospital in Portland, where he was listed in serious condition late Friday.

Carbon monoxide is an odorless, colorless, toxic gas produced during combustion of fuel. The American Medical Association estimates some 1,600 people die each year from carbon monoxide poisoning, and another 10,000 seek medical attention.
