Regarding the financial conspiracy theories on bird flu - even if true they miss the following points:

1. The the majority of flu experts in the world agree that this is a clear problem.

2. Flu pandemics occur as a historical fact

3. Pandemic flu viruses all have avian virulence factors

4. The low attack rate so far should not be taken as a sign that the virus will not acquire what is needed for human to human transmission.

5. If human to human transmission is acquired - there is no doubt that preparation is inadequate.

To a large extent the issue of preparedness comes down to your philosophy on whether or not you should prepare for a fairly lethal and highly disruptive event. As some here have pointed out from an investment perspective that is very risky. On the other hand there might be a confluence of factors like the need to upgrade a seriously outdated vaccine production technology.
