One of the first things Bush did when he came into power was slash veterans benefits. He wanted to cut even more but the GOP congress, afraid the Dems had a huge issue, lobbied Bush to put up an extra billion. That was because people like Kerry, Pelosi and Patty Murray were defending veterans from rightwing cuts.
