Peter, I have no doubt that you would have served you country with all you could give. Many were not called but were ready to go if called upon, but the cowardly hippies that fled to Canada got more press.

Some might say to both you, and me, "why didn't you enlist", but they don't understand the civilian obligations that many people have considering family, business, etc.

I was in the Guard when Korea came along, but was married, with two kids, and the army would not take me. By the time Nam came around I was too much of an old fart for them to put up with in the service.

I joined a close Jewish friend to go to war in Israel, but by the time he got the weapons assembled, and the plane chartered, it was over. That happened to be the six day war, when the fastest thing on earth, was an Arab tank with its back up lights on.
