It has been demonstrated that economies driven by resource extraction tend to be less free than ones with a wide range of economic activity. This is intuitive.

The Middle East is based on exploiting oil and importing everything else they need. Saudi Arabia at least has invested in food infrastructure. The big driver even of their economy is oil profits.

There is no surprise that that the Middle East is one of the least free regions in the world. Israel has no significant oil to extract, and their economy is based on many different industries. Is it surprising then, that it is one of the most free?
