Well, a quick news search on Yahoo turns up 18,730 articles on bird flu, including quite a few items about Bush's program to pump $7.1 billion into companies such as Rumsfeld's Gilead.

The first step in making windfall profits on FUD is to spread the FUD.

Drug companies already crank out millions of doses of vaccines, for each new strain of flu, every single year. As close as I can tell, the upper limit on their ability to produce such vaccines is controlled solely on anticipated demand.

Vaccines for the current strain of bird flu already exist. The real issue is that with an average of 16 cases per year world wide since 1997, demand for that vaccine for all practical purposes simply does not exist. Not to mention that being vaccinated for the current strain would be just about as useless as taking last year's flu shot for this year's flu, at least as far as any hypothetical mutation is concerned.

To put things in perspective, I might suggest this article on Rabbit Fever:

Would you be in favor of seeing $7.1 billion of your hard earned money go into "preparations" for a possible Tularemia pandemic on the assumption the bug will mutate into an air born human disease?

Unless someone is cooking up a batch of human bird flu in a bioweapons lab someplace, the threat of a pandemic simply does not exist.
