Imperial Oil has set an ambitious schedule for itself so that construction of the proposed Mackenzie Valley pipeline can begin in the winter of 2009.

In a letter sent to the National Energy Board and the Joint Review Panel on Thursday, Imperial updated its schedule based on public hearings on its natural gas pipeline beginning in January.

The company expects to have all the regulatory approvals it needs by June 2007. The following winter it would begin to build barge landings and stockpile sites along the Mackenzie River.

Construction would take two winters, with gas flowing by the end of 2011.

Imperial warns government and regulators "timely action will be required to maintain this schedule."

Gas producers say they will make their final decision about whether to go ahead with the project once it has all the approvals it needs.
