"Homes have become much larger in the past 30 years."

For sure. All of the homes in my immediate neighborhood were built in the 1930s and 1940s. The largest tips in at maybe 1300 square feet. Mine is a touch over 1200. Go several streets over, and there is a neighborhood that looks as if it was built in the 1970s. They are closer to 1800 square feet. Go over into College Station where they are building new homes, and 2400 square feet would be on the small side.

Its a phenomenon that's been going on for some time. It fits the capitalistic notion that you can never spend too much or build too big.
