Buying directly from the owner is a good method of avoiding used car sales persons. It has a greater risk if you get an unscrupulous seller. Used car lots, newspapers, retirement centers, friends, coworkers, neighbors, etc... If you know a mechanic you trust it would be well worth the $50 -$100 each to have them look at a few to avoid a lemon. If you are buying from a used car dealer you might have longer to use a used car investigation service like consumer reports or far facts. I have been told it is especially gratifying to buy from someone who can watch you enjoy the vehicle for several years. You might feel like quoting Monte Python: "I stick my tongue out in your general direction." <g>
