But California does not have the highest murder rate. It was 9th (6.7 per 100,000) in 2004, behind:

Louisiana 12.7
Maryland 9.4
New Mexico 8.9
Mississippi 7.8
Nevada 7.4
Arizona 7.2
Georgia 6.9
South Carolina 6.9

I am for the death penalty, and for it in the case of Williams. However, as noted in the following link, the murder rate is lower for states that do NOT have the death penalty.
