This week's New Yorker has an interesting essay by Jon Lee Anderson on Zalmay Khalilzad, the US Ambassador to Iraq. I'm much surprised by it.

This is the first I've seen that someone with serious competencies has been posted to Iraq. I've read several books about Bush folk in Iraq and none have had a sense for the local issues. Khalilzad is clearly different. He is, no question about it, a neocon and Anderson quotes others as saying he is fairly rigid. But he is doing the ambassadorial stuff very well.

My hat's off.

The article is not online at newyorker.com but it can be found at your local library in the December 19th issue.
