My reply is What Charles Said. But of course wordier. Including caveats about execution, which Sun hasn't won any gold medals for in a while.

But the bottom line is this: if the big picture even resembles the one Sun paints, who else would be able to put a 16- or 32-way 64-bit multiprocessor capable of running a large body of proven enterprise software into little more than a cool-running single-board form factor in 2006? (And it could go to much bigger machines and low-power supercomputers, I have no idea what they're planning.)

IF it's all real, then many corporate IT departments and government agencies, including some real biggies, couldn't afford not to buy the resulting products in volume. I know of no real competitors in sight for that technology, at least in the early going. This is not yet commodity stuff.

Intel is making plenty of noise about performance per dollar per watt, but they've got some ground to make up. I'm assuming these new Sun T1-based servers will be genuinely ready to ship in volume sometime in the first calendar Q of 2006 as claimed (i.e. February or March, which is what they mean when they say "the end of this year", which is effectively today).

Could turn out to be a nice position for Sun. But, we have to wait for the revenue numbers to start speaking for themselves.

Edit: It's not irrelevant to this story that at their current meeting the OPEC countries issued some new warnings about cutting production.
