With the exception of Sharp (and maybe Toshiba), the Japanese handset manufacturers have totally screwed up their opportunity to capitalize on the transition to 3G.

NEC has had development programs with 4 different chipsets going on (Huchison's handsets were with Agere). That is an incredible waste of resources. Sanyo seemed to be working closely with Vodafone for their 3G launch but the S750 has been a flop and they havent released a follow-on handset. Panasonic hasnt even been heard from. Some of these companies might have to completely abandon handset manufacturing if the foreign models ever start to get some traction in Japan.

We might also see some retrenchment with Agere. I'm not sure who they supply on the 3G side now that NEC has abandoned them.
