They didn't oust him. He was never a member.

The adhesion among the factions of the conservative coalition varies over time. Sometimes the collaboration is useful, sometimes less useful, sometimes at loggerheads. Just because Norquist and the neocons were closely collaborating for a while doesn't mean that he was a member.

As well it should. The Iraq War is the neocon's main claim to fame, their place in the history books. They provided the platform for Bush to shift gears into such previously unimaginable activities as nation building. Secondarily they have been important because they have enabled Bush's statism, which is the point we have been contending. It remains to be seen how historically important that will be.

There hasn't been a coherent domestic message because the neocons are not really players in that arena other than the aforementioned enabling.

The shifting sands under the conservative coalition are fascinating and important. Watching them (and potentially taking advantage of them if one is so inclined) works better when one can differentiate, at a minimum, among paleos and neos and socials and libertarians.
