To answer your questions:

pwl: Is it possible to develop useful drugs based on genetic knowledge before the entire human genome is mapped ?

JW: Yes, it most certainly is. The only problem is that "non-sense/garbage" sequences which represent a majority of the
genome hasn't been deciphered (no one really knows what they do...I am referring to the introns).

Also, specific locations of genetic disorders are still being isolated and the processes are still very unclear (e.g. regulation of gene expression).

I believe that at this stage, it is really hit or miss...a shot in the dark for companies like HGSI...because I think their "leads" on gene sequences are still in the early stages and they
don't know what to do with them. I believe another 2 years will be necessary for adequate development in this area. Gene sequencing should be completed as early as 1998...however, analysis of gene fragments will continue until at least 2003. We really won't see anything intentional by then...anything from now until then is PURELY random/luck (4 billion bases need to be figured out....good luck to HGSI...they have >90% of it...but they don't know what the heck any of it really means...they got some mRNAs figured out and the loci of many of these genes/protein products...but,again, they don't know anything about their regulation and the nature of genetic abnormalities in these areas.)

hope this helps.

feel free to comment or correct me. I am a little rusty with the technical b.s. jargon.
