But it is a 'system' and seems to have some logic behind it, been in place for a long time, and so far (in hindsight) largely accomplished what must be the US's objective of maintaining the status quo/delaying the inevitable at Asia's price of our manufacturing base and middle class.

I don't have any answers although my guess is the motives all around are to get rich and stay in power. Regardless, at the end of the day, it is likely impossible to really predict anything over the near term without first knowing how the folks controlling the levers determining the marginal propensities to purchase securities and buy dollars plan to behave given various scenarios.
