Adaptec Makes CD-RW Quick and
Easy; DirectCD 2.0 Now Writes and
Erases CDs Just Like a Floppy Disk

September 15, 1997

MILPITAS, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE) via Individual Inc. -- Adaptec's (NASDAQ:ADPT) new version of DirectCD lets consumers treat their new CD-ReWritable (CD-RW) drives like floppy drives.

Not only can users copy information in small packets, but they can also erase separate files ("random erase") instead of having to erase the entire CD. This innovation, along with the availability of inexpensive CD-R media, will accelerate the adoption of CD-R and CD-RW technologies.

Adaptec's DirectCD 2.0, based on Universal Disk Format (UDF) compliant packet writing technology, enables random erase for CD-RW, and is supported under Windows NT 4.0 and Windows 95 for CD-R and CD-RW. Packet writing allows users to send small amounts of data or "packets" to CD-R and CD-RW drives without wasted overhead and without the risk of data transfer interruptions (buffer underruns).

How CD-RW Works Like a Floppy

Through packet writing and random erase, DirectCD lets consumers use their CD-RW drives much like floppy drives. Using Windows Explorer, users can drag-and-drop, rename, move or delete files on the fly. Users can also save files directly to the CD-RW drive by using the "Save as" command in popular applications such as Microsoft Word, Netscape Navigator or Internet Explorer.

"Due to innovations such as DirectCD, CD-Recording is quickly becoming the hottest new CD-ROM feature," said Tom Shea, general manager for Adaptec's Software Products Group. "Now with Windows NT support and the ability to erase files, more users will be able to enjoy the convenience and flexibility that CD-Recording offers."

Pricing and Availability

DirectCD 2.0 is available to drive manufacturers and their direct representatives for resale to their installed base of customers. Manufacturers interested in ensuring DirectCD drive compliance and support should contact Adaptec at 408/957-6638 to inquire about the DirectCD Compatibility Program.

The earlier version of the software, DirectCD 1.01 for Windows 95, is now available directly to consumers who own DirectCD-compatible CD-R drives. Previously, DirectCD was only available as part of a bundle by CD-R drive manufacturers. DirectCD 1.01 for Windows 95 is available now from Adaptec for $69.

A complete listing of CD-R drives that have passed DirectCD compatibility testing can be found on Adaptec's web site at www.adaptec.com/DirectCD . End users may order DirectCD from Adaptec by calling the following numbers:
