"But the main point is that the suppliers have neither the capability nor desire to associate a purchase with an actual consumer."

That may be true now, but it is only a matter of time. The RFID tag will be associated with individuals in the same way that Safeway and twenty other chains give you a "savings card" and promptly compile a database with your name on it so that information can be sold to the highest bidder. That data can be correlated with your credit card transactions (sold by many banks), internet surfing habits (IP address/account match via cookies, web bugs, spyware and other techniques), search engine entries, and all other databases out there used to tailor advertising to you. So add color and fabric choices and a jump in spending habits and "they" suddenly infer that a) you got a raise and b) you are gay and so you get a brochure for Jaguar sedans in the mail <g>

Do you think the gov't isn't chomping at the bit to read an ID tag anywhere on car to track your every move? Track your person wherever you walk? The continued expansion of computer horsepower and storage space means everything trackable about you can and will be, same as now. My plain ol' home PC already has enough space on it for a 1000-word biography of every man, woman, and child on the planet.

In short, if the past 30 years has taught me anything, it's that when they *can* they *will*. The continued erosion of privacy rights is helping to pave the way for nefarious, clandestine surveillance of even the poorest slob out there.
