There has definitely been a blurring of the lines between what we should do for the best outcome and the strongest economy/society/polity in the long run, and what we can get away with because it works, even though it is bad for us.

The chronic trade and budget deficits are the prime example. Sure, we can get away with it as long as the rest of the world chooses to support us. Or we could be turned into the next Argentina if a bad outcome ensues, not even the worst case some can imagine.

Why take the chance? BTW, I quit smoking at 35 but it took a perforated ulcer to convince me it was a good idea. I wish I had arrived at the right conclusion with a less painful stimulus.
