I should have put this in the thread header. At a minium I see a frequent need to repeat it. A year or two ago I had dinner with an American couple we had known overseas long ago. By the end of the evening, I understood how Hitler had come to power via the ballot box. He just scared the crap out of everyone until they accepted a complete dismantling of the democratic state, one right and one guarantee at a time. Because it was "necessary" for "safety", the time-worn excuse.
