LOL! I have had lessons five or six times. We seem to get out of the habit every time we move and forget how.

I really, really, prefer simple calls to the plus style square dancing that some aficianados take up after a while. For me, it's very refreshing to swing four different women several times in every call. You can tell the experienced dancers because they lean back into your swing. Women who swing like a sack of flour are not much fun to dance with.

Plus dancers get so involved with complicated calls that they have to stick together in order to complete a dance. That means the beginners and mediocre dancers like me don't get the benefit of their experience, and it greatly lengthens the learning period. Even if I could get through a plus dance once in a while, I find that once somebody makes a mistake I don't know enough about where I'm supposed to be to get back on track. That's why I like to stick to basic dancing.

Most square dancers are wonderful people, but I've met a few jerks. The worst jerks are those who get mad if somebody makes a mistake. That doesn't happen often, and the preponderance is for the best dancers to help the inexperienced ones. Another type of unpleasant person is the one who doesn't try to master the basics, but tries to tell other people how to do it.

I've never been to a square dance where drinking was involved. The dancing itself provides the fun, and booze is not necessary to loosen up at all. In fact, a drunk could not do it, probably. I've never seen one try.

Square dancing has nothing to do with how good a person you are, so we will have to do some other test to see who is the best person. LOL!
