I doubt that was the reason. The reason was to insure more Republican votes. Often this is done by creating a minority district so that the minority votes are concentrated in to one area and instead of causing a slim majority for the Dems in two or more districts, they cause an overwhelming Dem majority in one district while allowing for a slimmer GOP majority in 2 or more districts.

The GOP tries to get more Republican districts, the Dems do the same thing when they are in power at the state level. Both sides gerrymander. I'd rather it be done in a non-partisan way and preferable with relatively compact contigous districts, but if things are going to be gerrymandered its better if the result reflects the political leanings of the whole area. Before the redistricting the Democrats were strongly over-represented.
