In WA state, a station on the Yakima Firing Range monitors traffic entering the COMSAT satellite ground station a few hundred miles south. (You there, Gumby?) COMSAT has another earth station at Jamesburg, CA. It is monitored from Two Rock Ranch in Sonoma County, CA,
And, when communications via undersea cable is used, that info is converted to microwave transmissions on land. Very easy to pick up.
