Hi Henry, I think you’ll find if you do some further digging into brinker’s record it is not as good as bob would have you believe. Did you know in October 2000 brinker sent all his subscribers a special bulletin and advised using between 20% and 50% of their cash reserves to buy QQQ now QQQQ? That bulletin has been archived here

I find it odd that it was not officially in his model portfolios but brinker wrote about nearly monthly in his newsletter. Do you think he was trying to dig himself out of that ever-deepening hole?

The BJ group of which bob brinker was a principal at the time also bought the Qs at indicated in this special announcement. BTW the B in BJ is brinker, the J is Sheldon Jacobs.

Did you know Mark Hulbert bought QQQ for brinker’s portfolios and then sold them when the November 2000 newsletter came out and they weren’t included?

Hulbert wrote about brinker in July 2001. In summary Mark told of how brinker blew it after the 1987 crash and went to cash near the bottom. He wrote “ This move ended up costing his portfolios, since it meant that while his portfolios suffered the brunt of the 1987 Crash, they participated in only a minority of the market’s recovery in the several years thereafter.” Hulbert does say his 2000 move to raise cash was more profitable. He also states brinker’s fund selections on average have lagged the Wilshire 5000. Finally Hulbert mentions the October 2000 QQQ unprofitable trade. I don’t know if Hulbert still does but at one time he had an * by the brinker record indicating the QQQ fiasco.

The point is brinker is one slick fella and I would advise you to do further research on his past and his lapses in integrity before placing all you trust and future financial well being in him. Don’t get me wrong brinker does offer some really great tips and recommends becoming your own money manager, good stuff. He does have his detractors and fans, both seem highly emotional. Best of luck to you and I hope retirement is everything you dreamed of and you don’t end up having to go back to work because of some bad advice.
