To be honest when I red first about 450mm my first thought was "don't they have other things to worry about".
But we talking about making an "intelligent guess" 10 years plus down the road.
And from what I read we can see a move to 4 core processors.
Theoretically that could mean 4 core consuming 4x wafer real estate (of course to certain degree they can compensate by shrinking to smaller linewidth).
The PC mutates constantly to different "states" - how often do you crank up PC to run spreadsheets?
Do we need 4 core processors? - I don't know.
I just got my broadband via satelite dish and I can't believe what I was missing - it's still "slow" relative to cable but I'm going to shitcan one of my wirelines and go Voip (excuse my french). (One of the SBC's tech told me they would gurantee 9.6 connection speed - that pushed me over the edge; constantly problems wiyh phone line)
Don't believe it would work for foundries because you need huge jobs to justify;
Intel, Samsung probably but perhaps we see consolidation within chipmakers.
There are some reports about Philips, Infineon and STM.
(STM used to be SGS located in Italy and Thompson located in France and it worked out and for some time STM is working/sharing fab with Philips (NL))

Have a good day
