With up to 300 million people to follow around and snoop on, the potential for a giant police state is frightening. I'm just fascinated at the idea that preserving freedom, liberty and democracy is taken to mean that we must become more and more like unfree authoritarian regimes. And a significant percentage of people who were born and raised in this system think it's a peachy keen idea. Maybe the fact they haven't lived in police states has something to do with it. It's all safer and less threatening as an abstraction that happens to someone else. Who deserves it, of course.
