Given it is set in the 30's they wouldn't have had to pay off the natives

Well yes, but the film was made in 2005. I was trying to give some thought to a politically correct comedy sequel for the future. Besides, by moving the tribe to L.A. the sequel could follow their....errr, adjustment problems to Disneyland, liberals and Ahnold.

Come to think of it they could've brought the T Rexes to L.A. as well. PETA could immediately go to court and have them released into the wild as a protected species. Of course, no hunting allowed. The ensuing spectacle of T. Rexes gorging on Disneyland, liberals and Ahhnold would pretty much carry the show.
