I don't understand your statement: The USA has been fairly belligerent towards NZ at times, but that's normal.

I haven't even heard mention of New Zealand, except as a great place to spend the North Hemisphere winter. My sister has sent me great pictures of her vacations there. If I had to live in the Southern Hemisphere (I have no such desire even to travel there), that's where I'd probably go.

How is the USA belligerent towards New Zealand?

I read "On The Beach" many years ago, so I'm aware that NZ is something of a retreat from nukes.

For a guy who thinks as you do about America, you certainly do spend a lot of time commenting on the negatives that you perceive. Why don't you take a vacation? Go fly fishing in New Zealand, or something. You can even read "A River Runs Through It" to psych yourself up for it.
