When standards of reason are suspended, it is bad enough. When constitutional guarantees are also breached at will, it is worse. We have been through this stuff before. As long as we can come out of it, we will be stronger for it. Joseph McCarthy use to wave around "a list" of known Communists and scare the hell out of writers and artists - targets of his anti communist program. Of course, Joe McCarthy had a lot of support. He couldn't get away with his stuff without a lot of support from the "intellectual community". And so it is - history is repeating itself. The silver lining in all this is that the current perceived threat is not nearly as formidable as the communist threat. We got over the communist threat, and we will get over this current threat. No question about it. But, eventually, something will come down the pike that is going to be more formidible and we will have difficulties getting over it. Our Constitution is pretty strong, it can withstand a lot of abuse, but I don't think it is completely fool proof.
