I think the terms you are looking for are unilateralism and multilateralism. The right argues that multilateralism prevents the US from taking actions necessary to its own security, while the left would say that unilateral US action undermines the alliances and international support we need for long-lasting international security, and prevents deals we need on global issues like trade and the environment.

I don't think either side has budged an inch on this question since we went into Iraq.
