The dificulty of sustaining a level of defense spending is primarily determined by the % of GDP spent on defense. The only times that I can think of since WWI when the % was lower was during the 30s and during Clinton's 2nd term. In both of those cases the percentage was not a lot lower. You really don't get it, do you? We are spending way too much on defense......PERIOD. It has nothing to do with percentages or dollar amounts. Its has to do with this country's obsession with weaponry and with military aggression. Things are way out of balance with Defense and the Pentagon having too much say in this country's future. It can be argued that our defense needs have gone down so much that this low level of spending is more than enough. Also our economy has grown so much that even though the burden of defense is historically low the actual amount spent in real dollar terms is not even if it is lower than social spending. We are spending 20% of 2.4 TRILLION dollars. That's outrageous! Do you know how many new homes that $$$ would buy for the poor? Do you know how many bridges needing repair in this country would be fixed by that spending? How many freeways? How many fuel efficient trains could be built? We could afford to build a space station and continue the exploration of space. Instead we plunk the money down on more nukes, more missiles, more 5K coffee pots for the military; more ridiculous BS. Where is the damn outrage????? In recent years spending has increased as a percentage of GDP, but only after the military went through significant cuts. I understand you are against the war in Iraq and think we should leave ASAP. Well that would reduce costs but other than that I find it hard to find any serious cuts left. Trimming here and there, pushing even harder to eliminate wastes and needless expense, sure, but thats a change at the margin not a major reduction, certainly not something that would greatly increase the % of our national income that we spend on the combination of social programs and infrastructure. That's because you have a militant's mindset.............we don't nearly need all the military crap we have. We are the most militaristic nation on the planet with the biggest budget by far........that should tell you something but instead it falls on deaf ears.
