SAN FRANCISCO — The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index declined more than 11 points, or 2.3 percent Monday (Dec. 19) after a brokerage reportedly cut ratings on six semiconductor stocks.

According to a Reuters report, brokerage Stifel, Nicolaus & Co. cut its rating on semiconductor stocks Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (AMD), Broadcom Corp., Intersil Corp., RF Micro Devices Inc. and Texas Instruments to "hold" from "buy."

According to the report, analyst Cody Acree said the market had already taken into account the semiconductor industry's strengths and it was "time to take profits" in the sector.

Acree also cut his rating on Silicon Laboratories Inc. to "sell" from "hold," according to the report, which quoted Acree as saying Stifel was not suggesting a major deterioration in the structural health of the industry, but that he did not see much room for short-term value increase.

The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index is a price-weighted index composed of 19 companies primarily involved in the design, distribution, manufacture and sale of semiconductors.
