The core issue in immigration is how you will take 11 million people, find them, process them and deport them. We only have 2 million people in all the prisons and jails nationwide. How do you process more than 5x that number? Who does it? How do you set up any kind of due process?

And how do you stop them from coming back since our porous borders allow another million per year to come in?

I understand why people don't like some of the outcomes of illegal immigration - budget costs, assimilation issues, etc. - but a huge chunk of those illegals are employed by nice, white, native-born Americans in all kinds of jobs. Economic dislocation is another major issue.

There is also a more liberal argument often voiced in State Department ranks that says the people who follow legal procedures for immigration are disadvantaged by amnesty programs for illegals.

All of which is true. But it begs the question - you have 11 million illegals in the US that we can't round up and deport and can't prevent from returning over time. So what do we do? We toughen the border a bit, toughen hiring limits a bit, toss around a lot of rhetoric to get reelected then live with this 800-pound gorilla in the living room, knowing he will never go away.

Makes no sense to me. But we do the same thing with drugs and prostitution, for all the same reasons (one of my non-mainstream positions).

I want to see an immigration policy that does something, not just stepping over the gorilla to get to the sofa.
