The bar for conviction of treason in a Totalitarian State is much much lower than in a democratic republic where freedom of expression and human rights are fundamental to the social core.

An American citizen may go so far as to legally object to policy and to legally oppose policy. It does not matter whether or not one finds the VVAW initiatives and goals laudable or contemptible. Screaming "treason" is a knee-jerk reaction. As active military, there may be some violation of military code--I don't know about that. But the charge of "treason" for representing the goals of a legitimate democratic assembly (the VVAW) is a bit over the top...
