I did some experiments yesterday comparing DriveImage XML and Ghost.

I finally overcame my difficulties with Ghost. I got it out of the system tray for good by using a startup monitor program. Not only does Ghost need to be removed, but there is another Norton program called Norton Ghost Agent and Windows Services that was the real culprit. It would reinstall Ghost in the tray, and I believe it was the one that was phoning home. Norton does not recommend disabling the agent. The missing recovery points were due to a setting which limited their number to only 3 for that particular backup. The setting is user definable. Oddly, the no longer valid recovery points remain on the disk, just occupying space.

I backed up 15gigs of mostly OS and programs using both programs. I just used another partition for the destination because it was handy. Both programs made reliable images that restored perfectly. The big difference was the time it took to create the image. DriveImage XML took 61 minutes and 8.5 gigs of disk space with compression selected. Ghost finished in only 24 minutes using 9.2 gigs of space at the standard compression setting. Restoring was much faster, but I didn't time it.

I'll probably use Ghost now that I've tamed it.
